Note: We recommend storing your pictures by date. It is easier to retrieve the
pictures.
Try to backup your pictures as often as you can. Once a week, once a month, etc. The last thing that you want to happen is for your hard drive to fail and then all of your memories will be lost.
Tip #1: Load, Look and then Backup!
However, if you would like to organize beyond simple dates, we have heard good things about
Picasa. It was recently voted "Best Product for 2003: Digital Imaging" and
won the prestigious DIMA Innovative Digital Product Award at the PMA show -
photo industry's premier trade show - for the second consecutive year.
We have added a Picasa
Review
(03.01.04) - it's really strong when it comes to making the complex tasks simple.
Fixing the Photograph - Contrast / Color
Color and contrast are the most common changes that you can make a bad digital photo into a good one. Contrast, in simple terms, is the difference between the dark and light areas in digital photo. Any imbalance will make the picture not seem quite right. Color or incorrect color is usually caused by difficult lighting situations - mostly indoors. As usual, these can be quickly fixed using your current digital camera software. We
suggest you not to spend too much time changing the color settings. If you take a lot of photos, this is way too time consuming.
Tip #2: Use the automatic adjustments
We only spend time editing the pictures that were to be sent to relatives and
friends, not all the pictures taken.
Noise - No Not Static - Digital Camera Noise
One of the by-products of digital cameras or any photography is noise or grain in film photography. Basically, (without going into the technology) your pictures in certain situations may slightly colored pixels in the shadows or darker parts of the digital photo. Usually in most cases, it will not cause a problem. But when you are shooting pictures where is it dark or where your camera has to use a faster setting (more on this later), noise can be a problem.
Lucky for us, this problem is easily solved. There is plenty of shareware digital camera software out there for us to use to eliminate noise. Pick out those pictures where you may want to blow up beyond 5x7 or for high quality viewing. In our opinion, 5x7 or less in most cases, noise is very hard to discern when printing. Then use either
Neat Image
or Noise Ninja.
We use the former and love its results and the price too.
Tip #3: Use noise reduction digital camera software to get that perfect picture clean
Follow this link for an example of digital camera noise and how we reduced it: digital camera software noise example.
Black and White or Sepia
Here is a trick that we love to use. If the picture just doesn't look right, you can always turn your picture into black and white or sepia. Sepia is a form of black and white - many older pictures used this effect to give a
little more "depth" for black and white pictures. We think it does look cool and so easy using your current digital camera software! In a recent wedding that we attended, we shared our photos and used black and white and sepia for certain pictures. People loved it and they do not know that we used it to correct the color pictures that did not seem right in terms of color or contrast.
Tip #4: Try turning your photos into black and white or sepia
Here is an example of how your pictures can look using this digital
photography effect.
Also, when sharing your pictures, it adds a bit of variety to just all color. A bit artistic - now you can be - and your digital camera software does it for you!
